Urgent Immigration Alert: Trump Administration Reinstates and Expands Travel Ban

What You Need to Know?

Travel Ban

At Cohen, Tucker & Ades P.C., we are closely monitoring the recent reinstatement and significant expansion of the U.S. travel ban by the Trump administration. This critical policy, effective June 9, 2025, at 12:01 AM EDT, introduces sweeping restrictions on entry to the United States for nationals of 19 countries, profoundly impacting individuals, families, students, professionals, and businesses.

Key Implications of the Expanded Travel Ban:

  • Full Visa Suspensions: Nationals of 12 countries will face a complete suspension of both immigrant and non-immigrant visas. This includes: Afghanistan, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar (Burma), Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
  • Partial Visa Restrictions: Nationals of 7 countries will face restrictions on immigrant visas and specific non-immigrant visas (B-1/B-2 tourist/business, F student, M vocational, and J exchange visitor visas). This includes: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

  • Widespread Disruption: This policy will cause significant challenges for U.S. employers relying on international talent, individuals with pending visa applications, and those planning travel or seeking to reunite with family.
  • Exemptions: Crucially, the ban does not apply to lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders), individuals with valid visas issued before June 9, 2025, foreign diplomats, and certain other limited categories (e.g., specific SIV recipients, adoptions, and national interest waivers).

What You Need to Do Now:

  • Stay Informed: If you or your employees/family members are nationals of affected countries, thoroughly review your current immigration status and future travel plans.
  • Seek Legal Counsel: It is imperative to consult with experienced immigration attorneys immediately to understand your specific situation, navigate visa uncertainties, and explore potential exemptions or alternative pathways.
  • Employers: Proactively assess your workforce for potential impacts. Prepare for increased visa scrutiny, potential hiring challenges, and consider strategies to support affected employees.
