Naturalization Filing Fee Increase Coming in October

Now is the time to file for your naturalization application
Are you a lawful permanent resident (i.e. green card holder) who has been thinking about applying for naturalization? If yes, now is the time to file your application. On October 2, 2020, filing fees for naturalization (Form N-400 for citizenship) will significantly increase.

 

Current fee: $640
Plus an additional $80 biometric fee for most applicants
New fee: $1,170
For applications postmarked on or after October 2, 2020

You may be eligible for naturalization if you meet following criteria: 

  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Have been a lawful permanent resident (i.e. green card holder) for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a United States citizen). Keep in mind you are allowed to file your naturalization application up to 3 months before your fifth anniversary (third anniversary if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Have lived in your current state of residence for at least the past 3 months.
  • Have continuously resided in the United States as a lawful permanent resident (i.e. green card holder) for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a United States citizen). This typically means you have no absences from the U.S. of 6 months or more during the past 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months during the past 5 years (18 months during the past 3 years if married to a United States citizen).
  • Have been a person of good moral character for at least five years before filing for naturalization (3 years if married to a United States citizen). Keep in mind you don’t need to be a saint to establish you are “a person of good moral character.” You may still be eligible for naturalization if you previously had run-ins with police.
  • Have been loyal to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
  • With some exceptions, you must be able to read, write, and speak English and show knowledge of United States history and our system of government.
